Black Australorp
The Black Australorp is a well-loved, heritage breed celebrated for its incredible egg-laying ability, gentle temperament, and glossy black plumage with a stunning green sheen in the sunlight. Originally developed in Australia from the Orpington, the Australorp quickly earned worldwide recognition for its productivity—holding records for some of the highest egg counts ever documented.
Australorp hens typically lay 250–300 large brown eggs per year, making them one of the most reliable layers for backyard keepers and homesteaders. They begin laying early, maintain strong production, and are known for their quiet, calm nature. Their friendly personalities make them excellent for families, beginners, and mixed flocks.
Highly adaptable, Black Australorps thrive in a wide range of climates. They handle cold weather exceptionally well and also perform reliably in warmer environments. Whether free-ranging or kept in a coop and run, this breed is easy to manage and a joy to keep.
