French Black Copper Marans
The French Black Copper Marans is a highly prized and elegant heritage breed best known for laying some of the darkest chocolate-colored eggs in the world. Originating in France, this breed is famous for its rich egg color, beautiful feathering, and calm, gentle temperament.
French Black Copper Marans hens typically lay 150–200 large, dark brown eggs per year, with egg color ranging from deep mahogany to near-chocolate tones. Their leg feathering—required for the French standard—adds to their classic, refined appearance. Their feather pattern features glossy black plumage with striking copper highlights around the neck, making them a standout in any flock.
Despite their sophisticated look, Marans are hardy, friendly birds that do well in a variety of climates. They are active but not flighty, making them suitable for families, hobby farms, and mixed flocks. Their combination of beauty, egg color, and temperament has made the French Black Copper Marans one of the most sought-after breeds worldwide.
